Unemployment in September was estimated at 7.6% in the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Porto Alegre, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported in its latest Monthly Employment Survey. In September 2014, the unemployment rate was 4.9%.
The figure, however, remained stable compared to August this year. Still, it has been a peak for the month since September 2009 (7.7%).
The unemployed population was estimated at a total 1.9 million people in the areas covered by the survey, a 56.6% growth in relation to September 2014. This means there are 670,000 more people looking for jobs in September this year.
The employed population was 22.7 million, reflecting stability compared to the previous month (August 2015), but a 1.8% decrease (minus 420,000 people) in comparison with September 2014.
The number of people working under formal job contracts in the private sector (11.3 million) has not changed from the previous month, but in the year-over-year comparison, it saw a 3.5% decline (409,000 fewer people than in September 2014).
