Brazil FMD vaccination campaign ends Saturday
The campaign against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), promoted by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply in Brazil, ends next Saturday (Dec. 17).
The inoculation is given to cattle and buffalo up to 24 months old in ten states (Alagoas, Amazonas, Ceará, Maranhão, Pará, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, and Rio Grande do Norte), in accordance with the national vaccination calendar. In 11 states (Bahia, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe, São Paulo, Tocantins, and the Federal District), vaccination is for the entire herd.
Vaccines
The shots must be purchased at authorized dealers and kept between 2 8°C from the moment of acquisition until use, including transport and application on the farm. New needles must be used to apply the 2-ml dose on the neck area of the animal, preferably during the cooler hours of the day, for proper containment and application.
In addition to the inoculation, producers must submit proof they have conducted the procedure to the animal health defense executive body in their state. The statement can be delivered online or in person when it is not possible, at the stations designated by the state veterinary service within the stipulated deadlines. Producers can declare vaccination until December 24.
