Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is expected to meet Juan Guaidó, Venezuela’s self-proclaimed interim president, on Thursday (Feb. 28) or Friday (1), along with Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo. Guaidó must arrive in Brasília on Wednesday (27), according to adviser with the vice-president’s office.

Last month, Venezuela’s Supreme Court of Justice banned Guaidó from leaving the country and froze his assets, granting a request by Venezuelan Prosecutor-General Tarek William Saab, President Nicolás Maduro’s ally. Despite the ruling, Guaidó went to Colombia and vowed to return to Venezuela soon.

Two days ago, Brazilian vice-President Hamilton Mourão held a private talk with Guaidó in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was an opportunity provided by a Lima Group gathering, attended by representatives from the Americas, in defense of a peaceful solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

On his Twitter page, Guaidó said that over 50 countries recognize him as legitimate president. Brazil, the US, Chile, Paraguay, and Canada were the first nations to acknowledge Guaidó’s position. In the region, Mexico and Uruguay chose to remain neutral, while China and Cuba showed support for Maduro’s administration.
