Brazil's Acting President asks confidence and collaboration to solve crisis
In his first words as acting president, Michel Temer said the Brazilian people has "to collaborate for the country to overcome the crisis it has been suffering." He mentioned the enthusiasm of politicians who attended the ceremony and spoke again about "the urgency to pacify the nation"and "unify Brazil."
After swearing in the new ministers of his reduced cabinet, Temer cited more than once the need to recover the economy. According to him, it is "urgent" to form a government to "save the nation."
"The Brazilian people must collaborate for the country to overcome the severe crisis we are faced with. Dialogue is the first step to face the challenges to advance and ensure the growth resumption," reported Temer, also mentioning the need of having political parties and civil society leaders engaging in the dialogue.
"My first word to the Brazilian people is confidence. Confidence in the values that form the character of our people, in the vitality of our democracy, in the recovery of the national economy within the country's potential, in our social and political institutions and in our capacity to jointly face this moment's tough challenges," said the acting president.
During his speech, he pledged to give continuity to social programs created by Lula and Rousseff like the Bolsa Família conditional cash transfer program, which transfers money to low-income families and the Minha Casa, Minha Vida affordable housing program, which funds popular housing for low-income families.
While the acting president was giving his speech, protesters against President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment caused a turmoil when they tried to enter the Planalto palace, the seat of government, but were prevented from entering the building by the presidential security.
