Over 23 thousand registered as candidates for Brazil October elections

Over 23 thousand people are competing for a post as president, state governor, senator, as well as federal, state, and district deputy are to vie for the votes of 147.3 million Brazilian electors, according to figures available on the website of the country’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The deadline for registering candidacies is over, and 13 have been presented as presidential hopeful in the October elections.

For governor, according to the latest official data, 171 signed in as candidates, 17 of whom seeking re-election.

So far, the court reports a total of 6,982 hopefuls in the race for a post as federal deputy—i.e. a representative in the Chamber of Deputies, the Brazilian lower house. For state and district deputy, 15,605 are running for the 1,059 spots in local legislative body of representatives. Another 295 are vying for a seat in the Senate.

Considering the total 23,812 running for a post in the October ballot, the PSL was the party with the highest number of hopefuls (1,259), followed by PSOL (1,201), and the PT (1,075) and the MDB (1,009). Of these, 30.6 percent are women, in observance of the target set under the law.

Nearly half of the candidates hold a university degree, and 55 percent (44%) are married. Most are aged 35 to 59, but 50 hopefuls are 80–84 years old.

The amount of candidates in 2018 is lower than 2014 (26,162). Figures may undergo further changes as the authorities consider the requests filed.
