Brazil has reached a total of 168,331 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 11,519 deaths from the disease. The data—made available Monday (May 11) by the Health Ministry in its daily report on the new coronavirus pandemic—show that 69,232 patients have recovered.
In the last 24 hours (from Sunday to Monday), the number of new reports of infected people stood at 5,632, up 3.4 percent from 162,699. Another 396 died, an increase of 3.5 percent from the number published on Sunday’s report (11,123).
Of the total of confirmed cases, 82,344 are being monitored and 69,232 have recovered.
São Paulo is still the epicenter of the disease in the country, with the highest number of deaths (3,743). The state is followed by Rio de Janeiro (1,770), Ceará (1,189), Pernambuco (1,087), and Amazonas (1,035).
Social distancing
The Health Ministry also published the new guidelines on social distancing measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. The proposals, dubbed after what was termed “risk management plan,” serve as a guide to assess the situation in each state or city before devising social distancing strategies and complementary efforts.
Four criteria are to be taken into account: installed capacity for treatment, epidemiological level, growth speed, and urban mobility conditions. Included under installed capacity is the amount of beds available and occupied.
