Initiated by President Lula, the event, titled "Democracia Inabalada" (Unshakable Democracy), aims to reaffirm the significance of the democratic system. In addition to the official commemoration, various organizations, social movements, and political parties will hold protests in cities nationwide.
Last week, the first 100 participants in the 8/1 incident became defendants on the charges. The complaint against another 200 is being analyzed this week, in a virtual trial.
The trial will be held in the court’s virtual plenary session between Tuesday (Apr. 18) and Monday (Apr. 24). In the virtual mode, the justices cast their votes electronically and there is no deliberation in person.
The measure meets the request of the government’s attorney general Jorge Messias, who requested action in the face of the call for acts of coup across the country.
