A day after the Brazilian squad faced the most devastating defeat in their history, in the World Cup semi-final match against Germany, President Dilma Rousseff stated that “not in our worst nightmare” could she have imagined a 7-1 smash. The president, however, said that the nation is especially skillful at overcoming challenges.

In an interview with Christiane Amanpour, on CNN, the president declared she feels “deeply saddened” by the result, “as are all Brazilians”. Rousseff went on to point out that the ability to overcome a defeat is “the mark of a great national team and a great country.”

Rousseff reiterated that the Brazilian squad walked into the field at the Mineirão Stadium, in Belo Horizonte, without two of their main players: star Neymar, who is the team’s top scorer, and captain Thiago Silva.
