Amazon Fund gets new donations from Norway and Germany
The Amazon Fund received new donations from the governments of Germany and Norway for anti-deforestation and preservation efforts in the Amazon Forest region. The Norwegian government invested $42 million and Germany's Development Bank donated $39.9 million.
The amount administered by the Amazon Fund now totals $938 million, of which $877 million were donated by Norway, $58.3 million by Germany, and $4.8 million by Petrobras.
Today, the fund has two calls for proposals open, which are to earmark $160 million for projects related to strengthening native, indigenous, riverside, and quilombola (slave descendents) communities in the Amazon Forest and the recovery of vegetation. Ever since it was founded, 93 projects have been benefited by the fund.
Created in 2008, the Fund is administered by Brazil's National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES), in cooperation with the Environment Ministry.
