Brazil gov’t greets Chile’s president elect
Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations issued a note Thursday (Dec. 23) greeting Chile’s president elect Gabriel Boric on behalf of the Brazilian government. The former students’ leader is youngest ever to be elected president in the country.
“By restating the solidity of our ties of friendship and cooperation, the Brazilian government underscores its willingness to work alongside Chilean authorities in strengthening bilateral and regional initiatives for the benefit of economic development goals, the defense of freedom and democracy, and the respect for the rule of law,” the note reads. The statement was released four days after election results came out.
With 54.72 percent of valid votes, Boric last Sunday (19) won the second round of presidential elections in Chile. His opponent José Antonio Kast, representing a right-leaning coalition, received 45.28 percent of valid votes. Hours after the outcome was disclosed, Kast recognized his defeat and congratulated the president elect on social media.
